Welcome to Horsehay Amateur Dramatic Society,
Thank you for your interest in the Society. Here you’ll find some useful information about joining us. We’re a friendly Society and anyone is welcome to join.
What do we do?
At HADS we perform three plays a year (we don’t stage musicals or pantomimes) in February, May and October. The following year’s production is decided at each AGM, usually held in June or July. Members wishing to direct put forward the play they would like to perform. If there are more than three members who wish to direct, then the membership vote on the plays they would like to see performed. Each member is eligible to vote as long as they have been a member before the closing night of the previous May play.
How and when do we rehearse?
We rehearse every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7.30pm to 10pm at Horsehay Village Hall. The rehearsal period is usually about 12-14 weeks. We tend to have a summer break from the end of the May play until the start of rehearsals for the October play in late July.
What can you get involved in?
Currently, we have just over 40 members in the Society. Not all want to act, there’s lots to get involved with, from set building, props, prompt, Front of House to lights and sound. Anyone is welcome to be a member.
What about auditions?
At HADS we have ‘Casting Guidelines’ which each director uses at the ‘reading’ (our informal auditions). Anyone is welcome to read for a part, however as a general rule, existing members will be considered for parts before new members. That’s not to say new members won’t be cast, if there are parts available then new members who are reading for the first time can be given smaller roles. It is highly unlikely that a new member will be cast in a main role. This gives us a chance to get to know one another and gives new members a feel for the Society. Of course, if a new member would like to get involved backstage or with Front of House for a production first before reading for a play, then we strongly encourage this too. Plays are cast either on the night, after the director and casting panel have discussed casting outside of the room, or those who have read will be informed via email the following day, if the casting panel feel they would like more time to make their decision.
How do you join?
You are more than welcome to come to a rehearsal one night to meet us and see what we’re about. There you can fill out a membership form. The annual cost of membership is £15/£10 concessions, which covers you under our insurance whilst working on and around the stage. If our production is already in rehearsals and both acting and backstage roles have been filled, then please consider getting involved with Front of House, we’re always in need of members to help! We’ll also email to you (or give a paper copy if you’re not on email) our Health and Safety policy, Casting Guidelines and Constitution.
If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us, either Edward (Society President): firstname.lastname@example.org or Jen (Chair): email@example.com
